Tonight, a young girl came into the shoe store where I work. She had an oxygen tube in her nose, and she was rail thin. When she began to try shoes on, I noticed that her skin was peeling, like after a bad sunburn. When she and her mother were ready to pay for the shoes, the young girl’s mother pulled out a bottle of hand sanitizer and said to her daughter “I know you don’t want to, but it’s life or death.” The young girl looked directly at me and said “I have cancer. I have no immune system, so I can’t touch anything. I shouldn’t even be in this store.” And my heart completely sunk. This girl looked like she was about 15 years old, and she is battling things that I can’t even begin to imagine. To do something that we all take for granted, something a simple as shopping, this girl has to risk her entire life. It broke my heart to see such a beautiful girl have to wear a wig and have to cover her skin because of the results of harsh chemotherapy. This girl is such an inspiration to me, and she is so strong. I don’t ever want to have to see someone as sweet as her go through this and feel as helpless as I do now, so that is why I have chosen to go into medicine. Defeating cancer may not be possible in the near future, but I want to do all I can. Oncology, here I come!

John and Rachel found these little guys outside by a boat ramp and they are in bad condition. One was already dead when we found them and the rest are scary thin. They all have eye infections and one has a messed up tail. We’re doing what we can for now but it’s likely they will need vet attention which I can’t afford (we already have a $10,000+ vet bill for my dog) so I added a donation button if anyone wants to help out a bit. Also if anyone in central florida is looking for a kitten let me know bc they are ready for adoption as soon as they’re cleaned up and feeling better.
